How do you build a mushroom growing house?

Here, you see typical oyster mushroom growing houses in Korea, somewhat different growing rooms in a big mushroom plant with a wide corridor as in those in Europe and America.

The first, top left, is a growing house for a shorter-term use while the others are made of durable materials for a longer-term use.

Growers can build any type of those mushroom houses shown above. As you may already assume, the modernized houses require about 2.5 to 3 times the cost of the traditional (conventional) one. Most of beginning growers, however, used to start with the simple greenhouse-oriented one. Nowadays, commercial growers opt for the permanent pannel growing house, whereas hobbist or trial growers still choose the less expensive one.

Let's get into the growing houses. To my luck, I could take two pictures of a conventional greenhouse-modeled mushroom house under construction.

I couldn't measure the size of each part of the structures but the following drawings will give you a hint on how this mushroom growing house is built.

According to those two diagrams above, typical traditional mushroom growing house dimensions are 5.6 x 19.8 x 4.4 m. Ta-ran. Hey, presto! Here's the completed mushroom growing house. Would you like it?

Don't you note any difference between Figure 5 & 6 and Figure 9? Need a hint? Look at the floor on the bottom. Growers have different opinions about the ideal floor. Some opt for earth & gravel floor and others for concrete one. Ground floor is said to be easy for humidity control but bears contamination risks.

How to grow growing houses? Let's take a look at how these two types of growing houses are built.

The growing house construction consists of site preparation, foundation & steel work and wall & roof construction, in large. Different from the construction of a common house, that of a mushroom growing house requires mounting of the shelf structures, (refer to Figure 6 & 8).

Most growing houses for both temporary and longer use have its floor covered with plastic films, styrofoam for insulation and wire mesh and concrete, with the shelf and wall frames (columns and posts) uprighted on the concrete slab (see Figure 5, 6, 7 & 8).

Steel channels must be well anchored into the foundation. The assembly and installation methods are shown left and below. C channel for columns and posts and the shelf framework are welded to the base plate and then anchored to the foundation with anchor bolts. All the channels, shelf-frames, struts and exposed anchor bolts must be galvanized (plated with zinc) for corrosion protection.
